Traits and stat ranks are two different ways to improve a unit in Anime Vanguards. A trait is one named modifier rolled at the Mandra Traits NPC, while stat ranks are separate percentage bonuses for Damage, SPA, and Range handled by the Cyan NPC in the Upgrades area. Mixing the two systems leads to expensive mistakes, especially when a player rerolls a strong trait while trying to improve a weak stat.
Use this hub to identify the system you need, compare the effect with the unit’s actual role, and decide when to stop. Exact probabilities, pity numbers, and numerical effects are update-sensitive; always compare a guide with the live Trait Index or stat interface before spending a large saved balance.

What a trait changes
The maintained community Wiki currently groups traits around Damage, attack speed through SPA reduction, Range, critical performance, experience, economy, and rare multi-stat effects. The visible list includes Monarch, Ethereal, Deadeye, Solar, Blitz, Fortune, Marksman, Scholar, Vigor, Swift, and Range. Each has a different use case; rarity alone does not make it correct for every unit.
Damage and speed
Examples: Vigor, Swift, Blitz, Ethereal
Use when: the unit already reaches the lane and needs more output
Check: attack animation, cooldowns, and whether SPA changes the real cycle
Range and coverage
Examples: Range, Marksman, Solar
Use when: extra reach adds meaningful path coverage or support targets
Check: placement geometry rather than the panel number alone
Critical focus
Example: Deadeye
Use when: the unit's kit already benefits reliably from critical hits
Check: existing critical chance, critical damage, and caps
Economy and leveling
Examples: Fortune, Scholar
Use when: the unit's real job is income or gaining unit experience
Check: whether the mode lasts long enough for the benefit to matter
One-placement power
Example: Monarch
Use when: one heavily boosted placement is worth more than the unit's normal multi-placement total
Check: placement cap, global abilities, support coverage, and team slot plan
Match a trait to the unit’s job
Begin with the failure you want to solve. If an enemy leaves the unit’s range between attacks, more raw damage may not help; Range or different placement might. If the attack reaches but fires too slowly, SPA can matter. If the unit is a farm unit, Fortune’s economy effect may improve the whole team’s upgrade timing more than a personal damage trait.
For a main damage unit, compare total output across all allowed placements. A rare one-placement effect can look enormous on one copy yet lose value on a unit designed around placing many copies. For a support, ask whether Range expands the buff zone, whether SPA changes a debuff’s uptime, and whether the trait affects manual or global abilities at all.
For a critical unit, calculate from the existing kit rather than treating critical chance as free damage. For a unit with a transformation or summon, test whether the trait carries into the secondary form. The Unit Abilities guide provides a checklist for conditions that can invalidate a simple trait recommendation.
Reroll without destroying progress
Use the Mandra Traits NPC and select the exact unit copy. Before rolling, note its current trait, evolution, Shiny status, stats, and role. Open the Trait Index and read the live pity display. Current community documentation says high-rarity trait pity is tracked per unit and is not reset by evolving, normalizing, or transferring stats, but the in-game interface should be the deciding source after an update.
Set a stop rule before the first roll. Examples include “keep any strong speed or multi-stat trait on this support,” “stop when 25 percent of the saved rerolls remain,” or “do not chase Monarch on a four-placement unit until the total-placement comparison is done.” A stop rule protects the account from turning a usable unit into an unfinished project.
Codes, Challenges, mode shops, event rewards, and other current systems can provide Trait Rerolls. Check the Items List and Shops guide before assuming a currency source is permanent.
Stat ranks are a separate decision
Stats add individual percentage bonuses to Damage, SPA, and Range. The Cyan NPC in the Upgrades area handles rerolls and transfers using Stat Chips or Super Stat Chips. Community documentation describes Stat Potential increasing through unit takedowns and resetting after a stat roll, so rolling immediately can waste a better future chance if the unit is still building potential.
Evolution can raise stat ranks under the documented system, but the top Godly step has special limits. Do not evolve solely because a colored border looks close to the next grade. Read the exact percentages and the current evolution preview.
Stat Transfer is destructive for the sacrificed unit. Current Wiki guidance says Mythic-or-higher units can transfer selected stats; the left unit loses progression such as stats, trait, ascensions, and levels, while the receiving unit replaces the selected stats. Shiny and evolution behavior has additional conditions. Read the confirmation window and never test with a unique or valuable copy.
A low-risk upgrade order
- Confirm the unit will remain in your team and that its form is the one you intend to build.
- Evolve or unlock core mechanics when the material cost is justified.
- Use the unit enough to understand its role and build Stat Potential where relevant.
- Fix a clearly weak Damage, SPA, or Range roll without chasing perfection immediately.
- Choose a useful trait family and set a reroll stop rule.
- Add Familiar or Memoria only after reading its unit restriction and effect.
- Retest the same stage, then decide whether the next resource belongs here or on another team slot.
This sequence is not mandatory for every account, but it prevents perfect trait chasing on a unit that later fails because of source availability, evolution cost, or a missing team role.
Traits FAQ
Is Monarch always the best trait?
No. Its one-placement restriction changes the comparison. It can suit expensive or low-placement units, while a multi-placement unit may gain more from a trait that preserves every copy.
Are SPA and attack speed the same thing?
SPA is the interval between attacks, so lower SPA usually means faster attacks. Animation, targeting, manual abilities, and downtime can still change real output.
Should I reroll a good trait to reach pity?
Only after deciding that the current trait does not meet the unit’s job and that the remaining resource cost is acceptable. Pity progress is not valuable if the unit becomes unusable during the chase.
